1870 – During an expedition to the Wyoming Territory, Henry D. Washburn observes and names the Old Faithful Geyser. Named during the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition and was the first geyser in the park to be named. It is a highly predictable geothermal feature, erupting on average every 92 minutes, with the period between eruptions ranging from as short as 35 minutes to as long as 120 minutes.
1958 – The Bank of America introduces its first credit card, the BankAmericard, in a test market in Fresno County, California. In 1958, Bank of America launched the BankAmericard in Fresno, California, which became the first successful program recognizable as a modern credit card. This card solved a problem: consumers did not want to use a card that few merchants would accept, and merchants did not want to accept a card that few consumers used. Bank of America chose Fresno because almost half of the city’s residents used the bank, and by sending a card to 60,000 Fresno residents simultaneously, the bank could convince merchants to accept the card.
