Lord Jesus, We lift into Your loving care all those who lost their lives in the attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Console their families, friends, and all who continue to mourn. Grant peace and rest to those who place their trust in You.
We pray also for the first responders, rescue workers, medical personnel, volunteers, and all who courageously rushed to aid the injured and comfort those in distress. Heal the painful memories they carry, the wounds borne in body and spirit, and transform their suffering into strength, compassion, and renewed purpose.
We seek Your strength and guidance for ourselves as we live in the aftermath of this tragedy and confront the shadow of evil. We stand in need of Your help.
Dear God, help us overcome fear by living with respect for one another. Teach us to continue in peace. Guard us against letting our fear and pain result in turning to hate.
In the face of hatred, may we show love. In times of distress, may we be voices of hope and love. In times of darkness, may we bear Your light. May we never see forgiveness as weakness, but as a source of strength in our lives and in our world.
Let us honor the memory of the lives lost on that day in September, and the lives lost since then in result of those events. With Your resolute strength, Almighty God, to live in this way—may Your love be made known through us. Amen.
