Lord of gardens, rivers, and living liberty, we come before You for New Jersey — a land of farms and pine woods, busy cities and a long bright shore, a people formed at the crossing of many roads. Thank You for civil and religious liberty so long enjoyed, for neighbors who still open their doors, and for churches and quiet ministries that feed the hungry, shelter the weary, and lift the fallen.
Teach this people to hold liberty with clean hands, and to seek a prosperity that does not forget the poor. Provide a home for families pressed by the cost of shelter. Restore those bound by addiction. Guard the shore and all who dwell along it. Give wisdom to those who lead, compassion to those who serve, and courage to those who labor in crowded streets and forgotten towns.
Where faith has grown thin, awaken a living hunger for You. Let true religion and civil liberty remain inseparable. Transmit the blessing of worship freely offered to the children yet unborn. Comfort the brokenhearted. Keep this Garden State under Your holy protection, and let its people walk in justice, mercy, and hope. Amen.
The Lord will hold you in his hand for all to see—a splendid crown in the hand of God. Isaiah 62:3 NLT
“God grant that in America true religion and civil liberty may be inseparable, and that the unjust attempts to destroy the one, may in the issue tend to the support and establishment of both. … That he is the best friend to American liberty, who is most sincere and active in promoting true and undefiled religion.” — John Witherspoon ‘The Dominion of Providence Over the Passions of Men’ (May 17, 1776)
