1844 – Samuel Morse, in a committee room within the United States Capitol, sent the message “What hath God wrought” (Numbers 23:23) to his assistant, Alfred Vail, in Baltimore, Maryland. This message marked the inauguration of a commercial telegraph line connecting Baltimore and Washington D.C.

1962 – Project Mercury: American astronaut Scott Carpenter orbits the Earth three times in the Aurora 7 space capsule.
