1903 – On this day in 1903, Horatio Nelson Jackson and Sewall Crocker embarked on the inaugural transcontinental automobile journey. Despite the absence of paved roads, unreliable maps, the absence of gas stations, rest stops, and fast food, they successfully completed the 5,600-mile journey from San Francisco to New York City. This remarkable feat took just over 63 days and required an impressive 800 gallons of gas.
