1902 – Mount Pelée on Martinique erupted, destroying the port of Saint-Pierre and killing approximately 30,000 people, 15 percent of the island’s population. Only a handful of residents survive the blast.

1945 – V-E Day (Victory in Europe). Following Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender, World War II in Europe officially ended at midnight. The German Instrument of Surrender signed at Berlin-Karlshorst comes into effect and marks the formal unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces, ending World War II in Europe. It triggered massive global celebrations, including street parties in London and packed crowds in Times Square. The day brought an end to six years of devastation, although war continued in the Pacific until August 1945.
