1889 – The Eiffel Tower is officially opened to the public at the Universal Exposition in Paris. The Exposition Universelle de 1889 better known in English as the 1889 Paris Exposition, was a world’s fair held in Paris, France, from 6 May to 31 October 1889. It was the fifth of ten major expositions held in the city between 1855 and 1937. It attracted more than thirty-two million visitors. The most famous structure created for the exposition, and still remaining, is the Eiffel Tower.

1915 – American baseball player Babe Ruth hit his first major league home run; he finished his career with 714 homers, a record that stood until 1974.

1998 – Steve Jobs introduced Apple’s first iMac, a personal computer that became hugely successful and helped revive the struggling company. Apple’s head of design Jony Ive and the rest of the design team developed sketches for a distinctive, all-in-one computer that was to be a legacy-free PC focused on ease of use and internet connectivity. The design team made the new computer colorful and translucent, built around a cathode-ray tube display wrapped in a curved plastic case. Ad agency director Ken Segall suggested the “iMac” name: it was short, had “Mac” in it, and the “i” prefix suggested the internet. Jobs initially hated it, but the name ultimately stuck.

2002 – Founding of SpaceX. Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, since its founding in 2002, the company has made numerous advances in rocket propulsion, reusable launch vehicles, human spaceflight and satellite constellation technology. As of 2026, SpaceX conducts more orbital launches annually than any other launch provider, including private competitors and national and governmental programs.
