1770 — James Cook arrives at yet to be named Botany Bay, Australia. Lieutenant James Cook first landed at Kurnell, on the southern banks of Botany Bay, in what is now Silver Beach, on Sunday 29 April 1770, when navigating his way up the east coast of Australia on his ship, HMS Endeavour. Initially the name Stingrays Harbour was used by Cook and other journal keepers on his expedition, for the stingrays they caught. That name was also recorded on an Admiralty chart. Cook’s log for 6 May 1770 records “The great quantity of these sort of fish found in this place occasioned my giving it the name of Stingrays Harbour”. However, in the journal prepared later from his log, Cook wrote instead: “The great quantity of plants Mr. Banks and Dr. Solander found in this place occasioned my giving it the name of Botanist Botany Bay”. Cape Banks is named after Joseph Banks and Cape Solander after Daniel Solander.

1992 — Riots in Los Angeles begin, following the acquittal of police officers charged with excessive force in the beating of Rodney King. Over the course of three days, Los Angeles, California, witnessed a series of riots and civil disturbances that resulted in the deaths of 63 people and the destruction of hundreds of buildings. These events unfolded from April to May 1992, beginning in South Central Los Angeles on April 29. The catalyst for the unrest was the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers charged with excessive force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King. The incident, which was captured on video by George Holiday, a bystander, received extensive coverage from various news and media outlets.

The riots spread across several areas of the Los Angeles metropolitan region, with thousands of people participating in the unrest for six days following the verdict’s announcement. During this period, widespread looting, assault, and arson occurred, posing significant challenges for local police forces to control the situation. The crisis in Los Angeles was eventually resolved when the California National Guard, the United States military, and several federal law enforcement agencies deployed over 10,000 armed first responders to help quell the violence and restore order.

The aftermath of the riots saw a staggering toll: 63 lives lost, 2,500 injuries sustained, over 12,000 arrests made, and property damage estimated at over $1 billion. This marked the most destructive period of local unrest in US history. Notably, Koreatown, located just north of South Central Los Angeles, suffered disproportionately due to racial tensions between the Black and Korean communities. The extensive nature of the violence was largely attributed to LAPD Chief of Police Daryl Gates, who had already announced his resignation by the time of the riots. Gates faced criticism for his failure to effectively manage the situation and for his overall mismanagement.
