1775 — The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. Seeing that two lanterns were lit in the steeple of the Old North Church, Sons of Liberty member Paul Revere rode into the night, alerting the Massachusetts colonists that the British ‘Regulars’ were coming by crossing the Charles River (“By Sea”).

1906 — San Francisco earthquake struck at almost precisely 5:12 a.m. local time; USGS calls it one of the most significant earthquakes of all time, claiming at least 3,000 lives, making it one of the deadliest disasters ever recorded in American history.

1942 — Doolittle Raid launched: first American air operation to strike the Japanese archipelago. The mission objective was the Japanese capital of Tokyo and other places in Honshu.

1983 — Suicide bomber attacked the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, killing 63 people, including 52 Lebanese and American Embassy employees.
