1452 – Leonardo da Vinci is born in Vinci, Italy. He was an Italian painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer whose skill and intelligence, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. His notebooks reveal a spirit of scientific inquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of their time.

1947 – Jackie Robinson debuts for the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking MLB’s color line. Robinson was brought up to play for Brooklyn in 1947. He was an immediate success on the field. Leading the National League (NL) in stolen bases, he received MLB’s inaugural Rookie of the Year award.

1955 – Ray Kroc opens a franchised McDonald’s in Des Plaines, Illinois (often treated as the corporation’s founding). Kroc launched McDonald’s Systems, Inc., later known as McDonald’s Corporation, in Des Plaines, Illinois, where he also opened the first McDonald’s franchise east of the Mississippi River.
