If you are running 10.5 Leopard, Apple is easing the transition by offering a free installer DVD for Snow Leopard 10.6 to MobileMe members just by asking — after installing, you can then purchase OS X Lion from the Mac App Store and be ready and waiting for Mountain Lion’s arrival.
