1959 – On this day in 1959, the United States Postal Service (USPS) made history by attempting to deliver mail using Missile Mail. The USS Barbero submarine launched a Regulus I missile carrying two small blue-and-red metal containers of mail just before noon. Remarkably, the mail reached its destination, a Florida naval station, in a mere 22 minutes. While the delivery was successful, it’s somewhat unsurprising that mail-by-missile never gained widespread popularity.
